Testimonies of Workers

Testimonies of workers:

  • One heart-breaking story was related to us by a Shepherd Society colleague who had gone to a home to deliver a food certificate. As she raised her hand to knock at the door, she overheard a child crying inside. The little girl was telling her mother that all she wanted to have was a piece of bread. The mother, upon answering the knock, looked at the certificate in disbelief and thanked God for answering her prayers.
  • A child, after having received an explanation for how the food certificates should be used, told his mother: “Finally you are going to cook chicken for us this coming Sunday!” We learned that the family had not been able to afford meat of any kind for more than two months.

Crafts and Farmers' Products

The Shepherd Society buys and markets local products and crafts produced by the families, such as olive oil, soap, olive wood, etc.

Additionally, the Shepherd Society has been instrumental in establishing and maintaining and Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) Clinic at the Bethlehem Arab Society for Rehabilitation (BASR), a local hospital in Beit Jala. This ENT clinic is the first of its kind in the region and it provides health care for hundreds every month. Equipment was generously donated by the Mustard Seed Foundation and Tear Fund in New Zealand.

There are many other ways that the Shepherd Society reaches out in the community on a periodic basis, such as providing seasonal food and gift parcels, distributing donated clothing, and assisting with relief projects in coordination with other agencies.

Family Sponsorships

Through this program, families from outside the Bethlehem area make a commitment to sponsor a local Palestinian Christian family who is struggling to survive.  Currently, over 75 families receive sponsorship through the Shepherd Society. The following are some of the basic guidelines for the program:

  • The current rate of sponsorship is $50 a month for a period of one year.
  • Biographical information, including a photo, will be provided on the family.
  • Periodic letters of encouragement to the sponsored family are always welcome and can be addressed to the Shepherd Society who will hand deliver the letter.
  • Special gifts from the sponsoring family are welcome, though not obligatory.
  • All correspondence (for example, periodic letters of encouragement or letters of appreciation) between the sponsoring family and the sponsored family should be handled through the office of the Shepherd Society in order to protect the privacy of both the family and the sponsor.
  • Families will not be identified for sponsorship prior to securing sponsors as the family would be disappointed if they were rejected for sponsorship for some reason.
  • Special visits between the families can be arranged if the opportunity and desire to do so is expressed.

Utilities

A major consequence of the humanitarian crisis for most Palestinians, even previously middle-income families, is that they are now accumulating high utility bills due to the fact that they have no money to pay. After three or four unpaid bills, the utility company cuts off service to the family.  The Shepherd Society tries to pay part of the outstanding balances, up to $70 per case.  The benefits are two-fold: restored electricity and/or water to the family and sustaining income to the utility company.

Tuition

As Palestinians continue to struggle through the economic fall out due to unemployment, siege, closures, and curfews, they tend to fall behind on children’s school tuition.  As a result, the schools suffer and children are threatened with suspension from school.  The average school tuition for a student in grades 1-12 is $500 per year.  The Shepherd Society pays a maximum of $60 per case per semester, but feels that in order to adequately assist the families, the amount should be raised to $100 per case.  So far, the Shepherd Society has helped to keep over 600 children in 12 area schools.  In this way, the Shepherd Society is helping to sustain the social infrastructure in a time of dire need.
